As a truck driver, Don Howell was used to being on the move. So as he approached retirement, Howell knew he needed something to keep him busy.

And he may have found the perfect way.

On May 3, Howell opened Don’s Glass Shop and Handyman at 152 W. Lincoln Ave. The shop opened with a special open house celebration, which treated customers to several door prizes, including a weed trimmer and tools.

Howell had a similar business at the same location in 2010, but the demands of a full-time job and a slow economy forced him to close.
But that was then.

Today, Howell offers a variety of services and products, including screen repair, custom glass-cutting and replacement windows. Howell also provides handyman services ranging from indoor/exterior painting to sharpening lawnmower blades and mower repair.

Although he’s still getting settled in, Howell said he hopes to eventually expand his business to possibly offering lawn mowers.

“I’ve already had people bringing me in items I’d never even thought of,” Howell said. “I even had someone bring me in a chandelier to repair.”

Howell encourages customers to bring in whatever they need repaired. If he can’t fix it, there’s no charge.

Regular business hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, but Howell is usually at the shop around 8. His business phone number is 785-531-0942.
